Katie Trzyna is Senior Counsel in the firm’s Chicago office, where she represents clients in complex litigation matters. Drawing on more than a decade of litigation experience, Katie has handled matters in both state and federal courts, including medical malpractice, constitutional and tort claims, employment matters, and probate litigation. Her background includes service as a federal prosecutor, judicial law clerk, and private practice attorney, giving her a well-rounded perspective on litigation strategy and courtroom advocacy.
Prior to joining the firm, Katie served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, where she defended the United States, its agencies, and employees in a broad range of federal civil litigation involving tort, constitutional, medical malpractice, immigration, and Bivens claims. She also served as the District’s Civil Division Asset Forfeiture Coordinator, overseeing civil and criminal forfeiture matters, advising federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies, developing district-wide policies, and conducting trainings.
Katie’s experience also includes serving as a judicial law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judges Jeffrey I. Cummings and Michael T. Mason of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In those roles, she conducted extensive legal research and drafted opinions on complex federal litigation involving employment discrimination, fraud, patent infringement, class actions, discovery disputes, dispositive motions, and sanctions. This experience provides her with valuable insight into judicial decision-making and effective advocacy.
Earlier in her career, Katie defended healthcare providers in medical malpractice litigation, managing all phases of litigation from discovery through trial. She has prepared and argued dispositive and pretrial motions, conducted depositions, served as second chair in jury trials, and developed litigation strategies for complex, high-exposure cases. She also previously represented individuals in probate, trust administration, and guardianship matters.
